The increasing industrialisation caused a desire among the townsfolk for recreation in a healthy environment. The members of the Bruneck improvement society knew how important an attractive town, good air quality and nature were for both locals and tourists alike. For this reason, the improvement society had hiking and walking trails created in the municipal area and around Bruneck.
One of the paths led to the newly enclosed spring on the Kühbergl. Later three ponds were created there. The woodland in the direction of Lambrechtsburg was reforested around the “Sternwaldele” and on the Schlossberg. In the town, the improvement society developed green oases and planted flowers – for example along the river Rienz, on the promenade from Floriani Gate to the Pulverturm tower and in the park south of the Ursuline convent, which today is known as Tschurtschentaler Park.
These measures made lasting changes to the townscape. Increasingly pathways were lined with hedges, and alleyways were refreshed or rebuilt. “Living fences” and trees gave squares a greener image.
The people largely welcomed these innovations and enjoyed the public spaces that were created. A few critical voices complained about the cost. The costs were, however, partly covered by the society or in part by donations, although the municipal authorities also gave considerable sums. Ultimately, however, the investment proved worthwhile for the economic development of Bruneck.
